What is Maca?
The word “maca” comes from two words in the South American language Quechua: “ma” means “grown in the mountains” and “ca” means “food that strengthens.”
Maca, or Lepidium meyenii, is a root that grows in the Andes in Peru at an altitude of 3,500 to 4,500 meters. It has adapted to living under the rather harsh conditions of the Andes, with warm days and cool nights, which is why it is so hardy.
Maca is a root vegetable that looks similar to a radish or turnip, and it tastes a bit like a mix between horseradish and parsnip. The plant belongs to the genus Cress in the Brassicaceae family and is thus closely related to garden cress and, to a large extent, to broccoli and cabbage.
